Authorities in New Iberia, Louisiana, have said the incident does not appear to be an intentional car-ramming.
An estimated 15 people have been injured in Louisiana’s Iberia Parish, after a car struck participants at a Lao New Year parade in the United States. According to a statement from the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, some attendees were seriously injured. The Acadian Ambulance company confirmed on social media that it had taken 11 people to the hospital using ground transport, and another two victims were airlifted to seek urgent care. Ten ambulances and two medical helicopters were deployed to the scene. The incident took place in New Iberia, a city of more than 28,000 in Iberia Parish, some 34km (21 miles) south of Lafayette, Louisiana. It is situated roughly 214km (130 miles) west of New Orleans. The Louisiana Lao New Year Festival parade is an annual tradition on Easter weekend in the parish, and the celebration features live music, food vendors and a beauty pageant. In the aftermath of the car crash, the festival issued a statement on social media, saying that all of its security resources had been surged to the scene. “We are profoundly saddened by the news of the incident near the festival grounds,” festival organisers wrote. “We are awaiting additional details from authorities as they become available.” They added that Saturday’s musical events were cancelled, though vendors were permitted to stay open until 9pm local time (2:00am GMT, Sunday). “We are praying for the victims and for their families during this difficult time,” the organisers wrote. “As of now, and if security resources are restored for tomorrow (Sunday) we will reopen only the religious services of the festival, and vendors will stay open.” The Lao New Year is a tradition typically associated with Buddhism, and it takes place each year in April, as the dry heat in Laos gives way to the wet monsoon season. Louisiana is home to a small but vibrant Lao community. In New Iberia, one neighbourhood is called Lanexang Village — roughly translated to the “million elephants” village — and it is reportedly home to hundreds of Lao people. Many arrived as a result of the Vietnam War, which bled into Laos, with communist and US-backed forces clashing over the course of nearly 16 years. The Pathet Lao, a communist movement, ultimately took over the country in 1975, ending Laos’s monarchy. Hundreds of thousands of people fled in the aftermath, with many resettling in countries like Thailand and the US.

Company says move amid US-Israel war on Iran comes after a request from the US government.
The Iran war picture blackout | Digital Dilemma Satellite imaging company Planet Labs has said it will indefinitely withhold visuals of Iran and the region of conflict in the Middle East to comply with a request from United States President Donald Trump’s administration. The US company announced the decision in an email to customers on Saturday, with news agencies quoting it as saying the government had asked satellite imagery providers to impose an “indefinite withhold of imagery”. The restriction expands upon a 14-day delay on imagery of the Middle East that Planet Labs implemented last month, which extended an initial 96-hour delay, a move the firm said was meant to prevent adversaries from using the imagery to attack the US and its allies. Planet Labs said it will withhold imagery dating back to March 9 and that it expects the policy to remain in effect until the end of the war, which began on February 28 when the US and Israel launched aerial attacks against Iran. The conflict has since spread across the region, with Iran firing missile and drone barrages at Israel and US assets, as well as civilian infrastructure across the Gulf. Planet Labs, which was founded in 2010 by former NASA scientists, said in its email to customers that it would switch to a “managed distribution of images” deemed not to pose a risk to safety. Under a new system, Planet Labs will release imagery on a case-by-case basis for urgent, mission-critical requirements or in the public interest. “These are extraordinary circumstances, and we are doing all we can to balance the needs of all our stakeholders,” the California-based company was quoted as saying. Military uses of satellite technology include target identification, weapons guidance, missile tracking and communications. Some space specialists say Iran could be accessing commercial imagery, including pictures obtained via US adversaries. Satellite images also help journalists and academics studying hard-to-reach places.

Electrical Transformer Manufacturing Is Throttling the Electrified Future
An explosion, a fireball and then darkness: Heathrow Airport uses as much energy as a small city, and when a major fire at a substation caused the power to fail late Thursday, the world learned how fragile our infrastructure can be. At the center of the chaos was a burning electrical transformer. The transformer is rarely considered as a linchpin of today’s technologically interdependent world, let alone as a key to the even more electrified future. But it’s a device that’s essential to powering almost everything, and these days it’s not that easy to obtain. Replacing Heathrow’s charred transformer — or the countless others destroyed in storms, fire and floods on an increasingly volatile planet — will not see a quick fix. “There is a lead-time of over a year for a new transformer of this size,” says Conor Murphy, vice president of engineering at grid-technology firm Novogrid. The astonishing Heathrow shutdown — leading to more than 1,000 canceled flights — traced back to a single point of failure is only the latest chapter of a story playing out all over the world. Without a transformer, projects of all kinds end up delayed with cascading consequences. In Europe, the shortage has throttled the buildout of cheap renewables, just as an energy crisis hit that caused electricity prices to spike. In the US, the lack of transformers has slowed down recovery in the aftermath of extreme weather. It took seven months for businesses in the industrial corridor of eastern Tennessee hit by Hurricane Helene last year to resume their full power consumption. At the other end of the state, meanwhile, transformers are causing headaches for tech companies that need new power-hungry data centers for artificial intelligence. The rise of a massive complex for Elon Musk’s xAI startup in Memphis, Tennessee, has forced a regional utility to go begging its peers for spare transformers to avoid delays. This is the first story in Bottlenecks, a series examining the many obstacles slowing the transition to a cleaner, more electrified future. Even comparably low-tech projects can end up hamstrung for want of a piece of equipment that’s been in widespread use for more than a century. In Houston, a project to construct 16 duplexes, where young adults fresh out of foster care move in and learn to live independently, spent a year and a half on hold before reaching completion last June. The cause was a missing transformer. “You can’t build on a generator,” says Carole Brady, executive director of nonprofit HomeAid Houston. “It was holding up aid to young adults who were literally in trouble.” The Covid-19 pandemic strained many supply chains, and most have recovered by now. The supply chain for transformers started experiencing troubles earlier — and it’s only worsened since. Instead of taking a few months to a year, the lead time for large transformer delivery is now three to five years. Among a basket of 47 goods needed to build grid infrastructure, transformers have seen the greatest increase in price — a near doubling since 2018, according to JPMorgan Asset Management. “We are trying to solve for the unknown constantly,” says Kevin Doddridge, chief executive officer of Mississippi’s Northcentral Electric Cooperative. It was his company that helped out another utility in a pinch to accommodate the xAI data center, trucking spare units 60 miles south to Tallahatchie Valley Electric Power Association. Transformers change voltage and make electricity safe to use. They can be as small as a household trash can or as large as a shipping container. They dot the landscape of every part of the inhabited globe, even in most places with insufficient access to electricity. Most people ignore them. Yet when it comes to making the grid work, these janky metal boxes with odd-shaped ceramic parts jutting out are as irreplaceable as electrical cables. A bottleneck around the global supply of transformers spells trouble for sustaining infrastructure we have, from airports to homes, and for expanding emerging technologies we want such as AI as we enter the “age of electricity” as the International Energy Agency calls it. But the constraint is most ominous for what it will do to slow the necessary transition to clean energy, the best solution to rising temperatures. LLM Wiki – example of an "idea file"
A pattern for building personal knowledge bases using LLMs. This is an idea file, it is designed to be copy pasted to your own LLM Agent (e.g. OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode / Pi, or etc.). Its goal is to communicate the high level idea, but your agent will build out the specifics in collaboration with you. Most people's experience with LLMs and documents looks like RAG: you upload a collection of files, the LLM retrieves relevant chunks at query time, and generates an answer. This works, but the LLM is rediscovering knowledge from scratch on every question. There's no accumulation. Ask a subtle question that requires synthesizing five documents, and the LLM has to find and piece together the relevant fragments every time. Nothing is built up. NotebookLM, ChatGPT file uploads, and most RAG systems work this way. The idea here is different. Instead of just retrieving from raw documents at query time, the LLM incrementally builds and maintains a persistent wiki — a structured, interlinked collection of markdown files that sits between you and the raw sources. When you add a new source, the LLM doesn't just index it for later retrieval. It reads it, extracts the key information, and integrates it into the existing wiki — updating entity pages, revising topic summaries, noting where new data contradicts old claims, strengthening or challenging the evolving synthesis. The knowledge is compiled once and then kept current, not re-derived on every query. This is the key difference: the wiki is a persistent, compounding artifact. The cross-references are already there. The contradictions have already been flagged. The synthesis already reflects everything you've read. The wiki keeps getting richer with every source you add and every question you ask. You never (or rarely) write the wiki yourself — the LLM writes and maintains all of it. You're in charge of sourcing, exploration, and asking the right questions. The LLM does all the grunt work — the summarizing, cross-referencing, filing, and bookkeeping that makes a knowledge base actually useful over time. In practice, I have the LLM agent open on one side and Obsidian open on the other. The LLM makes edits based on our conversation, and I browse the results in real time — following links, checking the graph view, reading the updated pages. Obsidian is the IDE; the LLM is the programmer; the wiki is the codebase. This can apply to a lot of different contexts. A few examples: - Personal: tracking your own goals, health, psychology, self-improvement — filing journal entries, articles, podcast notes, and building up a structured picture of yourself over time. - Research: going deep on a topic over weeks or months — reading papers, articles, reports, and incrementally building a comprehensive wiki with an evolving thesis. - Reading a book: filing each chapter as you go, building out pages for characters, themes, plot threads, and how they connect. By the end you have a rich companion wiki. Think of fan wikis like Tolkien Gateway — thousands of interlinked pages covering characters, places, events, languages, built by a community of volunteers over years. You could build something like that personally as you read, with the LLM doing all the cross-referencing and maintenance. - Business/team: an internal wiki maintained by LLMs, fed by Slack threads, meeting transcripts, project documents, customer calls. Possibly with humans in the loop reviewing updates. The wiki stays current because the LLM does the maintenance that no one on the team wants to do. - Competitive analysis, due diligence, trip planning, course notes, hobby deep-dives — anything where you're accumulating knowledge over time and want it organized rather than scattered. There are three layers: Raw sources — your curated collection of source documents. Articles, papers, images, data files. These are immutable — the LLM reads from them but never modifies them. This is your source of truth. The wiki — a directory of LLM-generated markdown files. Summaries, entity pages, concept pages, comparisons, an overview, a synthesis. The LLM owns this layer entirely. It creates pages, updates them when new sources arrive, maintains cross-references, and keeps everything consistent. You read it; the LLM writes it. The schema — a document (e.g. CLAUDE.md for Claude Code or AGENTS.md for Codex) that tells the LLM how the wiki is structured, what the conventions are, and what workflows to follow when ingesting sources, answering questions, or maintaining the wiki. This is the key configuration file — it's what makes the LLM a disciplined wiki maintainer rather than a generic chatbot.
